Student Evaluations for Jeffrey J. Hayden
CHN451 - 2002

CHN451 - Fall 2002

Impressive course preparation.
A couple of HW assignments did not seem very relevant, otherwise excellent course.

- I felt the content was quite in-depth for a 400-level class and sometimes very difficult to understand. I know there is a need to examine those who have contributed to the field but the course seemed to go into much more detail and convulted rambling than was necessary.
- I felt the instructor did an "OK" job of presenting the material, but with a subject of this nature its hard to expect much more.
- I think some suggestions for improvement could include giving the quizzes after the material has been tauught, not before.
- Also, I don't recommend long assignments on topics of minor value like Gwoyeu Romatzyh that just kill studentsŐ desire
- Finally I think you have to teach to the level of the students in some way. Not all of the students already have background in linguistics.

The beginning of the semester, the instructor needs to emphasize how heavy the reading is for the course. Also, that the reading is advanced. It should be recommended a previous linguistics course be taken prior to this 400 level course.
The instructor was very helpful to discuss any problems with the reading.

Some of the homework assignments were too difficult, and oftentimes I felt slightly bombarded and overwhelmed by the coursework. Some of the selected readings were very difficult to comprehend and oftentimes not all material was reviewed in class. Having no background in linguistics, I felt that I was at a disadvantage in this course, but overall the material was useful and interesting. Though my bad grade is well deserved, I feel satisfied with the course overall. Course was well organized.
