Goals & Objectives:
Students will gain listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in standard (Mandarin) Chinese, attaining approximately the Intermediate-low level on the ACTFL-ETS (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) proficiency scale. Specifically, students will be able to achieve the following:

Listening
Able to understand sentence-length utterances which consist of recombinations of learned elements in a limited number of content areas, particularly if strongly supported by the situational context. Comprehension areas include such basic needs as getting meals, lodging, and transportation, and receiving simple instructions and routine commands.

Speaking
Able to handle successfully a limited number of uncomplicated task-oriented and social functions pertaining to such topic areas as those mentioned above. Can ask and answer questions, initiate and respond to simple statements and maintain face-to-face conversation. Can perform such tasks as introducing self, ordering a meal, asking directions, and making purchases.

Reading
Can read, for basic survival and social needs, simple connected, specially prepared material and can puzzle out pieces of some authentic material as it reflects similarity to specially prepared material and/or to high-frequency oral vocabulary and structure. Can puzzle out very simple hand-printed messages, personal notes and very short letters which are written by a native speaker used to dealing with foreigners. Able to decode one or two elements from simplest connected texts dealing with basic personal and social needs, such as signs, public announcements and short, straightforward instructions dealing with public life.

Writing
Able to meet limited practical writing needs. Can write short messages, postcards, and take down simple notes, such as telephone messages. Can create statements or questions within the scope of limited language experience. Material produced consists of recombinations of learned vocabulary and structures into simple sentences on very familiar topics.

Class Requirements:

  1. Attendance: Attendance is mandatory. Absences without valid reasons will affect your grade. (See Grading below)
  2. Class Preparation: Always come to class prepared for the day's lesson. Tapes are available in the language lab on the first floor (Moore 156). You are expected to go to the Lab and listen to the tapes independently. To complete some of the homework assignments, you will need to listen to the tapes.
  3. Homework and Assignments: All homework and assignments must be turned in on the due day as indicated in the syllabus. Late homework and assignments will NOT be accepted. You are expected to listen to the tapes and practice writing characters EVERY DAY! No language can be acquired overnight. You need to build up your Chinese language proficiency gradually through constant practice.
  4. Quizzes and Tests: Besides a few pop (unannounced) quizzes, all tests and quizzes are written in the schedule. If you know you must miss a class ahead of time, tell the teacher before the class. Quizzes CANNOT be made up unless arrangements are made BEFORE being absent from class. No one is allowed to make up a missed test without a valid, written excuse.

Grading:

  1. Attendance and Participation: 20%
  2. Quizzes/Unit Tests: 25%
  3. Homework & Assignments: 25%
  4. Midterm and Final: 30%
  5. Final grade for the semester:

90-100%=A
80-89%=B
70-79%=C
60-69%=D
0-59%=F

You are reminded that each student's background, interests, learning style, difficulties and goals are different. Please be patient with each other and do not hesitate to see me for extra help or extra work in a certain area.
